Charles was born the oldest of 2 children to Salathiel and Lydia Timmons
just the year before his father went off to fight in the Civil War. His
father came home when he was 4 or 5 years old. Charles and his parents,
along with his younger sister Effie moved to Boone, Iowa in 1881, and in
1890 moved to a farm 2 miles north and 1/2 mile west of Malvern, Iowa.
The 1880 Census shows Salathiel and Lydia, 45 and 40, live with their
children Charles F. 19 and Effie N. in Humbolt Township in Illinois.
Effie was 12. On their farm they had an apple orchard and raised
    chickens.

After marrying Emily Bass, they lived for a short time southwest of
Malvern, then moved to a farm northwest of Red Oak, then to a farm
southwest of Pacific Junction, Iowa. In 1907 they sold this farm and
bought a farm south of Ashland, Ne. They sold that farm in 1915 and moved
to Valley, NE with their 6 children, and lived on a farm 1 1/2 miles north
of town, where Charles continued farming until his death.

    Notes:

Salathiel and Lydia were married in 1859, and the following year moved to Illinois (1860), and apparently lived is Coles County. Salathiel was one of 10 brothers and 2 sisters. He is known to have lived in Ashmore Township both before and after the Civil War. They owned their farm. A brother Isaac lived with Salathiel and his family for a time after the war.

On August 1, 1862 (He was a married man) Salathiel, Laban, Leroy and Battle H. Timmons all from Hutton township of Coles, County, entered the Civil War as Union soldiers. Their date of muster was September 6, 1862. He left his wife and baby son (Charles) behind. He was in the 123rd Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company A for 3 years. He was honorably discharged in 1865, at Maltoon, Illinois. While in the war he was in the skirmish on Stone Hill (Feb. 14, 1863), Pierce Hill Canesoth, Milton, Tennessee; and the Battle of Chaplin Hill. He had marched 1,191 miles.

His grandson Ellis Graves of Malvern, Iowa, has his discharge papers. While in the army, Salathiel suffered a severe attack of typhoid fever, "losing for a time the power of speech", and may never have recovered his full strength.

THE STORY OF SALATHIEL TIMMONS' NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE, by Glenn Timmons

"My father (Charles Franklin Timmons) told the story many times about his father (Salathiel Timmons) being ill and left for dead when his unit went into battle. In his unconscious state, he dreamt that he was marching into battle with many soldiers and he saw the flashing of guns and decided he did not want to go on and he dropped out of line. He then woke up to see his brother over him. He had come back to claim his body." He also mentioned that his grandfather experienced the sensation of being pulled through a "dark place" or "tunnel" and seeing a light.

Salathiel and Lydia and their children moved to Boone, Iowa after the war,t hen about 1890 they moved to a farm 2 miles north and 1/2 mile west of Malvern, Iowa where they had an apple orchard and raised chickens. They later moved to Malvern. According to Salathiel's obituary (Mills County Tribune, May 14, 1909) he died in Malvern on May 3, 1909 at the age of 74. He had moved to Boone County, Iowa in 1881, to Mills County in 1888, and into the town of Malvern in 1904. The obituary adds: Mr. Timmons was converted to the religious life in Boone County in 1882 and united with the Methodist Church. His conversion was clear and decisive, and he has always been counted a consistent, earnest and faithful Christian man.

Salathiel suffered a "stroke of paralysis" in 1902, another on April 24, 1909, and the third, which proved to be fatal, on May 3, 1909.

(The following column was submitted by Mrs. Alma Fraker of Martinsville. It was prepared with the cooperation of Mrs. Ruth Shrake of Bloomington, and in part was taken from an early issue of the now defunct "Morgantown Truth." On a farm near Germantown, Ohio, Peter Dill was born. He was married to Emily Patton, who was born at Middletown, Ohio on April 21, 1809. Peter was born on October 2, 1807. To this union were born eleven children:

    1. Lucy A., Feb 12, 1830 in Germantown, Ohio
    2. Eurasmus, Dec. 7, 1831 in Germantwon, Ohio
    3. Richard M., Aug. 7, 1833 in Germantown, Ohio
    4. Jas M., Aug 14, 1835 in Germantown, Ohio
    5. Sarah, Sep 14, 1838 in Cass Co., Indiana
    6. Francis M., May 30, 1841 in Morgantown, Indiana
    7. Mary (said to be a twin of Francis M)
    8. Emeline, Sep 2, 1843 in Morgantown, Indiana
    9. [Karen's note: there is no #9 in the list, it should be Harriet)
    10. John M., Mar 23, 1849 in Morgantown, Indiana
    11. Peter M., Dec 9, 1852 in Morgantown, Indiana

Sometime after 1835, the Dills sold their farms and in covered wagons started west to illinois. In Indiana, Peter Dill became so impressed with the country in Cass Co. he decided to go no further, so he and his wife and four children established a home where they lived until 1840, moving from there to Morgan Co. There they built a cabin on the banks of Stott's Creek a few miles north of Morgantown, Indiana.

Mr. Dill made a success and we might say a fortune as he cleared this land of hte heavy timber and brought these broad fertile acres into a state of production and the immense yield of grain was fed into hogs and cattle which made Mr. Dill a very wealthy man.

In his last years Peter Dill moved to Franklin, Ind. He died there on October 28, 188 at the age of 81. His wife, Emily, died 37 days later on november 29, 1888 at the age of about 80.

Richard Monroe Dill, the son of Peter and Emily Patton Dill, was born on August 17, 1833 ...[read remainder of article under Richard's notes]

In 1853, Peter Dill, William Lang and Harvey Coleman began cutting timber for the first mill built in Morgantown, Indiana. It was at this time that R.M. Dill became acquainted with Mr. Lang's daughter, Matilda.

When the mill was finished and in operation, Mr. Coleman sold his interests to Wm. Lang, who had acquired Peter Dill's interests and then sold the mill to Stevens and Robinson, later buying it back and taking in his son-in-law, R.M. Dill, as a ffull partner. This partnership continued till 1867 when R.M. Dill became the sole owner and the business was conducted as R.M. Dill and Sons. Mr. Waltman bought the mill in 1889 and converted the mill from an old burr type to a roller mill. Again in 1896 Mr. Dill purchased the mill.

The Franklin Democrat, Friday, May 25, 1888, Volume XXVIII, Number 48, page 5, column 3

Peter Dill of our city is still quite feeble and is confined to his home with heart trouble. He was eighty years old last October and his wife passed her eightieth birthday last month. This venerable couple had been married over fifty-nine years and of their eleven children all but one lived to have families of their own. The many friends of Mr. Dill throughout the county will unite with us in the hope for his recovery from his present illness.

    Death of Peter Dill, Sr.

Peter Dill, who has been sick at his home in this city for many months, died on Tuesday evening at 5 o'clock. Mr. Dill was born in Ohio in 1807, but had been a resident of Indiana since 1836. He was married to Emily Patton fifty-nine years agoooo, who still survives him at the age of eighty years. He moved to Morgan county in 1840, where he remained until 1871 when he removed to this city. Mr. Dill was the father of eleven children, six sons and five daughters, of whom eight are living five sons and three daughters. In early life he united with the Baptist church but upon the disorganization of that church he joined the Christian church of which he remained a faithful member until death. Mr. Dill was a kind father, a good citizen and an exemplary Christian and in his death it can be said that the community has lost one of its worthiest members. His funeral was preached at the Christian church in this city on Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock by Elder S. F. Fowler of Louisville.
