John Jefferson Cogburn and Clint Farmer went to Tennessee to work. Clint came back home. There was no Post Office at Cruso at that time and John Jefferson wanted to send a letter by Clint Farmer to his wife, Martha Caroline. When he addressed the letter, he thought of a little Chinquapin bush below his house, so he addressed the letter to Martha Cogburn, Chinquapin, N.C. Hence the name Chinquapin Branch or Road. This was told to Essie Sellers Jervis by Clint Farmer. Essie is John Jefferson's great granddaughter.

    Military Service:
(Not confirmed that this is "our" John J. Cogburn). A record dated December 5, 1863 shows that John J. Cogburn enlisted on September 23, 1863 at Camp Vance under Captain J.C. McRae for the period of the war. He was enlisted as a Private in Company E of McRae's Battalion. A receipt dated may 2, 1864 shows that conscript J.J. Cogburn received clothing.

    - Mary was not married; had a son, Arthur Cogburn shown in 1900: wife, Lora Hl and children Cordelia, Cornelia, Varnnie. Mary was also shown living with Arthur's family in 1900 census, as age 66.

  1. 8.  John Coggburn was born in 1784 in North Carolina, USA; died on 1 Mar 1852 in Greene, Tennessee, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • 1830 Federal Census: 1 Jun 1830, Greene, Tennessee, USA
    • 1840 Federal Census: 1 Jun 1840, Greene, Tennessee, USA
    • 1850 Federal Census: 18 Oct 1850, Greene, Tennessee, USA

    Notes:

When John Coggburn married Malinda Rice, John Jr. was a witness. In John Coggburn's will, he only mentions his five youngest children. Margaret Jane Cogburn, a granddaughter of Henry Coggburn said that James, Henry, Patrick and Lucinda were brothers and sister and they all came to Montgomery County, Arkansas from Greene County, Tennessee. She also said that when she was 8 years old, that their half-brother Nathan Coggburn came to visit them. Since Nathan was John's son by his second marriage, this proves that John was the father of James, Henry, Patrick and Lucinda.
